Modified Backoff Algorithms for DFWMAC‘s1 Distributed Coordination Function

چکیده
The distributed coordination function (DCF) in the upcoming standard for wireless LANs IEEE 802.11 is based on a CSMA/CA like access protocol. The collision avoidance part applies a rotating backoff window mechanism, that causes unequal collision probability distribution depending on the position of the selected slot within the contention window. We present simple modifications for the backoff mechanism using weighted probability distributions and a load adaptive scheme for the slots that result in a lower collision probability and therefore in higher throughput of up to 20%.

Enhancing the Selection of Backoff Interval Using Fuzzy Logic over Wireless Ad Hoc Networks
IEEE 802.11 is the de facto standard for medium access over wireless ad hoc network. The collision avoidance mechanism (i.e., random binary exponential backoff-BEB) of IEEE 802.11 DCF (distributed coordination function) is inefficient and unfair especially under heavy load. In the literature, many algorithms have been proposed to tune the contention window (CW) size. However, these algorithms m...

In the design of wireless networks the medium access control (MAC) protocols have a very high impact on the performance of the network. The IEEE 802.11 is widely accepted technology for the Wireless LANs has been used by wireless networks. Delay is one of the important parameter to measure the performance of the wireless networks. We give a delay analysis of the Distributed Coordination Functio...
متن کاملOptimizing Channel Access in Wireless Local Area Network Environments with a New Backoff Approach
Over the past few years, several backoff algorithms such as Exponential Increase Exponential Decrease (EIED) and Adaptive Enhanced Distributed Coordination Function (AEDCF)) have been proposed for wireless local area networks to improve channel access. We propose a new backoff technique that monitors the number of backoff counter pauses experienced and modifies the contention window accordingly...
متن کاملImpact Of Mobility and Transmission Range On The Performance of Backoff Algorithms For IEEE 802.11-Based Multi-hop Mobile Ad hoc Networks
The medium access control (MAC) protocol is the main element which determines the system performance in wireless local area networks. The MAC technique of the IEEE 802.11 protocol is called Distributed Coordination Function (DCF). In IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), network nodes experiencing collisions on the shared channel need to backoff for a random period of time, which is...
متن کاملCharacterizing the Stability Region of IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function - Part I: Single Channel Analysis
In this paper we model and characterize the stability region of IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) both qualitatively and quantitatively. We also provide an intuitive explanation and verification by comparing it to the known stability region of slotted Aloha. We show that the size of backoff window plays a decisive role in shaping the corresponding stability region. Specificall...
